  • Squats – but shouldn’t my knees be behind my toes??? By Ianthea Connelly

The humble squat is a bone of contention in the fitness community. I would guess that it is one of the most utilized exercises in the fitness instructor’s arsenal, and rightly so; they are one of the exercises that place our musculoskeletal system under great demand. We all know that squats involve our quads, glutes, hamstrings and calves, but many of us don’t realize that you actually use your hip flexors, abdominals and spinal extensors heavily to stabilize your upper body during the squat. The high level of muscle recruitment involved in the squat has a ton of benefits, including increased metabolic demands (think more calories burnt) and increased neurological activity (which can ....

  • Should we be re-thinking sit-ups? Written by Step Monty

We all want a six pack right? And I’m sure we’ve all done more than our fair share of crunches and sit-ups. But are sit-ups the best way to get that washboard tummy, or even a ‘strong core’? Latest research suggests not. In fact, it suggests that traditional sit-up (and other lumbar flexion exercises) could in fact be damaging our lower backs. Our lower backs (the lumbar region), has limited range of movement and is surrounded by muscle and thick fascia designed to keep the lumbar spine stable. As you move up away from the lumbar, towards the thoracic and cervical spine, this thick fascia is no longer present and allows a greater range of movement through both the thoracic and ....
